Recommended Screening
We are often asked what background checks should be performed on job applicants and employees. Background investigation is not an exact science. Each employer should consider the nature of their business, the position to be filled and the individual’s responsibilities, such as will this person handle money or valuables; is there public interaction; will he/she be driving or using machinery or equipment; is there management or supervisory responsibility ? Consult with your legal counsel and/or your insurance provider.
There are three types of background checks that we believe are critical for any applicant or employee:
State Criminal - A State Criminal search will reveal a persons record in a particular state. It does not cover all 50 states, only the state requested. These reports are not always current. In most states, counties have up to 18 months to report court records to the state agency.
County Criminal - These searches should be conducted where a person has lived, worked, or attended school within the past 18 months.
Social Security - This search will reveal previous addresses, dates, and aliases. It will also alert for cases of fraud and can help you pinpoint the counties and states to be queried for background.

The purpose of this search is to verify former addresses associated with a given person only. It is not used to adjudicate employment. This data comes from a third party database, that is a collection of information from numerous sources, which matches names, addresses and counties to a given SSN. When ordering a SSN Trace and Past Address History, information from this database is provided if the name entered is found on the database with a match to the SSN entered. If so, the data provided will include all names and locations associated with that SSN in the database. This may include some alternative name matches. These alternative names may be from mistakes in data entry during credit applications and such in the past, or they may be an indicator of fraud or identity theft. Searches are returned within 2-4 business days and are ran by NAME and DOB. Social Security Numbers are not included on many criminal records due to privacy laws in many states. Still, this is one of the most important tools for uncovering criminal records available. Because law enforcement must report charges resulting from arrests on felonies, misdemeanors and other offenses, the county criminal search is conducted at the county level where a subject is most likely to have any information filed.
